Mobily Not to Block Voting for Reality Show
Lulwa Shalhoub, Arab News JEDDAH, 30 December 2005 — Mobile service provider Mobily has announced it would allow customers to vote through their cellular phones for their favorite contestants on the popular show “Star Academy.”

There were reports that because of complaints about the show, the company would block calls and SMS messages to the program.

“We are working on the service that will soon allow our customers to participate in this program through calls and SMS,” a Mobily representative told Arab News. “Our customers will receive SMS in the following days that inform them of the way and the numbers that they can use in order to vote for their favorite candidates.”

“Star Academy” is a reality show where cameras follow 19 contestants as they participate in a talent camp for singing and dancing.

Each week the participants perform and viewers vote on their favorite acts. The participant with the lowest number of votes each week is disqualified.

The program has received numerous complaints from many people since it was first aired in 2003 that, because it depicts singing and dancing, it does not abide by religious or social traditions.

Mobily’s announcement that it would allow its subscribers to call the show contradicts a previous report in Arab News that said Mobily banned voting to “Star Academy”.

Saudi Telecom has blocked local calls or SMS messages to the program, but viewers can call the show’s international number, said Abdullah Al-Shihri, STC’s media affairs director.

Shihri defended Saudi Telecom’s decision to block calls and SMS messages to the show’s local number because — being a nationalized Saudi company — it cannot participate in programs that contradict the Kingdom’s Islamic traditions.
