[SIZE="6"]Stocks, Crude Oil Fall on Fed Speculation Stocks fell the most in about a month, oil slipped below $80 for the first time in a week and the dollar strengthened as concern deepened that demand in China is slowing and the Federal Reserve prepared to signal whether it will act to safeguard the economic recovery. The MSCI World Index slumped 1.3 percent at 11:32 a.m. in New York, and Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 0.9 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 2.9 percent for the biggest drop among 72 national measures tracked by Bloomberg. Oil tumbled 2 percent and copper futures slipped 1.9 percent. The dollar gained versus all of its 16 major peers except the yen. China said import growth and the pace of property-price gains slowed in July, deepening concern that demand is waning in the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Equities advanced yesterday amid speculation slower job creation will prompt the Fed to say it’s prepared to take measures to strengthen the recovery. Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said last month the central bank wasn’t ready to take action in the “near term.” “The big question is whether this is a double-dip or a slow- down; we’re in the slow-down camp,” said Carol McMullen, who oversees $2 billion as president of Eastern Wealth Management in Boston. “It’s a very uncertain market and the Fed will try to be supportive as we work our way through this.” The Federal Open Market Committee will release its statement at about 2:15 p.m. in Washington. Market Reaction The central bankers may find the market reaction to any announcement of steps to spur growth will be bigger than the impact on the economy. Options outlined last month by Bernanke include providing more information about the Fed’s pledge to maintain record-low interest rates, reducing the rate it pays on banks’ reserve deposits and sustaining or expanding the size of the balance sheet. “If they’re small scale, the direct effects are relatively small,” said Marvin Goodfriend, a former research director at the Richmond Fed. “But to the extent that they signal the Fed’s concerns and what direction they are, and the Fed’s willingness to take actions given the signal of their concerns, they could have big effects.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 96.42 points, or 0.9 percent, to 10,602.33 as 28 of 30 stocks fell. Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. lost 2.7 percent as metal prices declined after growth in Chinese imports slowed. Exxon Mobil Corp. dropped 1.1 percent as oil fell. Novell Inc. slumped 2.3 after lowering its third-quarter sales forecast. China, Russia The Shanghai Composite gauge fell the most in six weeks after China said imports gained 22.7 percent in July, less than the 30 percent median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index dropped 1.4 percent, heading for the biggest retreat since June 29. Russia’s Micex Index sank 1.5 percent. Record heat and drought in the world’s largest energy exporter are curbing stock trading as bankers flee Moscow to escape smoke from wildfires. South Korea’s won fell for the first time in eight days after the North fired artillery near a disputed sea border, while the South African rand slumped 0.8 percent versus the dollar as most of the country’s state workers began a strike. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index slid 1 percent, led by basic- resource producers and travel companies. BHP Billiton Ltd., the world’s largest mining company, fell 2.6 percent. TUI Travel Plc, Europe’s biggest travel operator, slumped 10 percent after saying earnings will be at the lower end of forecasts. Worst Since May Oil fell as much as 2.8 percent to $79.20 a barrel in New York. Copper futures slumped up to 2.5 percent to $3.2715 a pound on the Comex in New York. The ThomsonReuters/Jefferies CRB Index of commodities slipped 0.5 percent, posting a fourth straight drop, the longest losing streak since May. The dollar strengthened 1 percent against the euro to $1.3092. Australia’s dollar fell for a second day against its U.S. counterpart, dropping 0.7 percent to 90.96 U.S. cents, after a report showed business confidence in the nation slipped in July to the lowest level in more than a year. Treasury 10-year note yields were within 3 basis points of the lowest level in more than 15 months. The benchmark 10-year yield dropped less than 1 basis point, or 0.01 percentage point, to 2.83 percent. The extra yield investors demand to hold 10-year Treasuries instead of 2-year debt touched the narrowest on a closing basis in more than a year. The yield on the shorter maturity rose as the U.S. prepared to sell $34 billion of 3-year securities, part of a combined $74 billion of bond sales this week. Pork-belly futures for August delivery rose 3.5 percent to a record $1.32 a pound on the Chicago Board of Trade, jumping by the exchange limit of 4.5 cents. المصدر |
