They sneered when John Montgomery, chief of Bridgeway Capital Management, the Houston-based $1.5 billion (funds under management) mutual fund group, graduated from Harvard Business School in 1985 and began applying to investing the computer modeling and quantitative methods he used as a research engineer at MIT in the late 70's.

"I Put significant thought into how to apply to investing the quantitative methods that I learned at MIT, and over the next six years it was significantly more successful than even I had anticipated," the soft spoken, 48 year-old Montgomery told Big Money Watch.

"I was making about twice the amount of money in the stock market as at my day job," he says, recalling the early days of his number-crunching hobby. "Then I thought, why not do this professionally for other people." In 1991, Montgomery began dedicating himself full-time to perfecting his quantitative computer models. Bridgeway incorporated in 1993, becoming operational in August, 1994.

No one sneers now when Montgomery, who also has a BA in Engineering and Philosophy from Swarthmore College, fires up his computer to screen out stocks which are statistically cheap. Bridgeway boasts a record of extraordinary performance, with Barron's magazine naming four of its 12 funds amongst the hottest 100 in the U.S.

Investment Style
A pure, ultra disciplined, "quant" shop. "We don't just use our modeling as the first step in a process and then go out and kick the tires: like interviewing management, thinking about the future, or conducting competitive analysis and all the rest of it," explains Montgomery. Whether the stock market is rallying or tanking, "we stick with just the modeling process that picks individual stocks going into a fund," he adds.

There are different models for each type of fund. And Montgomery doesn't attempt market timing. "I cautioned myself early on that this is an incredible way to destroy value," he says, adding: "We don't do any economic prognostication either. It's all numbers and statistics." Performance
Bridgeway's Aggressive Investors 1 fund has grown an average 28% in each of the past five years, and over ten years ranks number one within its peer group and number three amongst all mutual funds. Its Ultra-Small Company fund is up a striking 34% annually over five years. Collectively, Bridgeway has grown 22.33% a year since inception.
