Ar-Razi to invite EPC bids for fifth plant
PETROCHEMICALS SAUDI ARABIA
11 Jun 2004

Saudi Methanol Company (Ar-Razi) is preparing to release tender documents for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to add a fifth methanol unit at its Jubail complex. Ar-Razi, a 50:50 joint venture established in 1979 between Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) and a consortium of Japanese companies led by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company (MGCC), operates the biggest single methanol production site in the world (MEED 9:1:04).

Industry sources say the release of the EPC tender is now expected in mid-June, with bids due to be returned in mid-September. Ar-Razi’s fifth unit will have capacity of 1.5 million tonnes a year (t/y) of methanol. Companies understood to be among those that have responded to Ar-Razi’s solicitation of interest are Japan’s Itochu Corporation and Germany’s Lurgi.

Ar-Razi’s last major expansion, completed in 1999, involved the construction of an 850,000-t/y methanol unit, based on technology from MGCC. The contractor on Ar-Razi-4 was Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) of Japan. The company’s total methanol capacity at its Jubail site stands at over 3 million t/y (MEED 26:9:97).
